Don’t Let the School Diagnose Your Child

As a parent you have choices. If your child’ s teacher is implying that she thinks your child has focus and attention issues and suggests you take her to a doctor for testing, know that you have options. The teacher maybe good at their job, but they are not a doctor.  The usual treatment for focus and attention issues is a prescription drug.  Not just any prescription drug, but a Class II controlled substance that is highly addictive and can cause serious and life threatening consequences.  Somewhere along the line the teacher has learned that kids who can’ t focus or behavior should be diagnosed and need a drug. This could not be further from the truth. Even if you take you child to a doctor on your teacher’s recommendation, the doctor may not take the time to do a complete and thorough medical and educational evaluation of your child. The doctor may just take the teacher’ s word on it and diagnose your child and prescribe one of those controlled substances. Just because the doctor does that, it doesn’ t mean that is what your child needs.
Don’t Forget You Are In Control of Your Child’s Future
Often times school personnel will  ask to test your child if they have focus and attention issues. Just because the school wants to do the testing doesn’ t mean you have to go along with it. You do not have to sign the papers at your child’ s school allowing them to “ test” your child. If the school wants to test a child for learning disabilities, that would be beneficial. But parents can limit testing to only that. You do not have to sign whatever the school asks for, giving them the opportunity to evaluate your child any way they wish. Some parents officially inform the school personnel that they do not allow the school to test their child psychologically.  Understand that any “ testing” for a potential diagnoses to be given to your child is completely subjective and is only based on a check list of symptoms. It is not a real objective test.
Don’t Give Your Child A Label That Holds Them Back From Reaching Their Potential
Allowing your child to be tested and diagnosed its not something to take lightly.  Labels and diagnoses can dictate what your child or others think they are capable of accomplishing.   Instead of helping them you can actually be holding them back, further there are other options you have to helping improve behaviors and skills that make school, interacting with peers or emotional control harder.  Labels usually limit the solutions explored to treat problems and unfortunately the traditional treatment for focus and attetnion is not a solution but instead only medication that covers symptoms.
If your child is struggling with hyperactivity, focus, attention, behavior or concentration, give them more than a quick fix.  They deserve a lasting solution for long term success!
